Basements can be an outstanding amenity and home feature that add value to any property, whether you use them to store possessions, to do your laundry, as an extra bedroom, or for another purpose. However, if it’s leaking, a basement can rapidly turn into the main problem that threatens your whole home investment.
Leaking basements are a general problem in homes across India. A small leak that goes ignored can turn into a huge major that causes massive problems, such as damage or loss of property and dangerous structural issues. To make matters worse, some older homes may be prone to leak basement structures – a problem that gets worse with time.
At Mahi Innovations, we provide high-quality solutions like basement waterproofing that keep homes dry & water-damage-free.
If you are uncertain of the condition of your basement and worried about leaks, take a look at four of the most common types of basement leaks as well as how to identify them in your home.
#1: Hydrostatic Pressure
The first kind of problem that can cause basement leaks is hydrostatic pressure. Hydrostatic pressure is water pressure caused by rain and water bring soaked into the soil around your foundation. This water pressure pushes water and moisture through your basement walls & floors, causing leaks that are characterized by average-height and floor level leaks.
This type of basement leak is easy to spot and recognize because they are usually found isolated on a wall or floor with no real source to account for the moisture.
#2: Lateral Pressure
The soil around the perimeter of your home tends to be softer because of water buildup and moisture around your home’s foundation. When water falls off of roofs or out of blocked gutters, this soil tends to absorb this extra water, causing it to enlarge. While soil is a soft material, having large amounts of soil expand can cause great pressure against your foundation as well as leaks in your basement. This is called lateral pressure and it is one of the most general reasons for basement leaks.
#3: Window Wells
If you are notice water leaks or stains around the bottom of a basement window, you most probably are having a problem with the window well. Most basements that are built partly exposed above the ground will have windows installed to allow for natural light to help light up the dark basement. Eventually, these windows can become exhausted, causing the seals to fail under heavy rainfall. If you have water pooling up near the exterior of a basement window, it is best to work out a way to keep this water properly drained therefore that it does not cause other damage to the window.
#4: Internal leaks
Sometimes your basement leaks may seem like they are coming from the walls or the bottom, but they can actually be coming from pipes or fixtures in your basement. To find the source of your leak, you will want to find where the water is pooled up and follow the water stream back to where it was created from.
A leaking pipe can cause water to trickle slowly down a pipe until it meets a wall or floor, making it look like the leak is coming from another area. To make sure there are internal leaks, dry the area completely and check it periodically for any improvement.
